Save and OpenArchive are designed to never collect or store any sensitive information. Media preserved by the Save mobile application cannot be accessed by us or unauthorized third parties because there is no centralized database or server that manages your media and we use Orbot and Tor for private and secure data transmission between the application and the destination server. If you choose to use the Internet Archive or other public servers as a destination, the information you share with them such as your email address, media, metadata, etc. will be public. You agree to OpenArchive’s Terms of Service (“Terms”) by installing, using or accessing our apps, including our Save app ("Save") services, or website (together, “Services”). If you are entering into these Terms on behalf of a company or other legal entity, you represent that you have the authority to bind such entity to these Terms, in which case the terms “you” or “your” shall refer to such entity. These Terms will apply to your use of the Services, whether or not you are a registered user of our Services.
You must be at least 13 years old to use our Services. The minimum age to use our Services without parental approval may be higher in your home country.
We do not sell, rent or monetize your personal data or content in any way – ever.
Please read our Privacy Policy to understand how we safeguard the information you provide when using our Services. For the purpose of operating our Services, you agree to our data practices as described in our Privacy Policy, as well as the transfer of your encrypted information and metadata to the United States and other countries where we have or use facilities, service providers or partners. If you choose to send media to the Internet Archive, your media will be stored on their servers, which as of December 8, 2025 are located in the United States and Canada.
In order to enable new features and enhanced functionality, you consent to downloading and installing updates to our Services.
You are responsible for data and mobile carrier fees and taxes (if any) associated with the devices on which you use our Services.
You agree to use our Services only for legal, authorized, and acceptable purposes, including in accordance with the Code of Conduct (which is hereby incorporated into these Terms). You will not use (or assist others in using) our Services in ways that:
(a) violate or infringe the rights of OpenArchive, our users, or others, including privacy, publicity, intellectual property, or other proprietary rights.;
(b) involve sending illegal or impermissible communications such as bulk messaging, auto-messaging, and auto-dialing; or
(c) violate any applicable law.
You also must not (or assist others to) access, use, modify, distribute, transfer, or exploit our Services in unauthorized manners or in ways that harm us, our Services, or systems. For example you must not or attempt to (t) gain unauthorized access to our Services or systems; (u) disrupt the integrity, security or performance of our Services; (v) create accounts (if applicable) for our Services through unauthorized or automated means; (w) collect information about our users in any unauthorized manner; (x) impersonate another person or otherwise misrepresent your affiliation with a person or entity, conduct fraud, hide or attempt to hide your identity; (y) translate, disassemble, decompile, reverse assemble, reverse engineer all or any part of the Services; or (z) sell, rent, or charge for our Services.
We embrace privacy by design and do not have the ability to access your media or credentials. You are responsible for keeping your device and your account safe and secure. When you download the app on a new device, you will not have access to media that was not backed up from your former device (such as photos, videos, audio, text, etc.).
Our Services do not provide access to emergency service providers like the police, fire department, hospitals, or other public safety organizations. Make sure you can contact emergency service providers through a mobile, fixed-line telephone, or other service.
Our Services may allow you to access, use, or interact with third-party websites, apps, content, and other incorporated products and services (such as ProofMode, Tor, and Internet Archive) (together, “Third-Party Services”). You acknowledge and agree that, when you use any Third-Party Services, your use of those services is governed by the Third-Party Services’ terms and privacy policies, and that access to any such Third-Party Service may be suspended or terminated without notice. Your use of any Third-Party Services is at your own risk, and we shall have no liability to you with respect to the Third-Party Services or any actions or claims by any third-party providers.
Nothing in this agreement will be considered a representation or warranty by us regarding any Third-Party Services. The availability of Third-Party Services does not imply our endorsement or affiliation with any Third-Party Services or third-party providers.
You own any media or information you submit through our Services. You represent and warrant that you own or have all necessary intellectual property rights, licenses, contracts, and permissions to upload any form of media in connection with the Services. You agree that by uploading or submitting any media or information to or through the Services, you grant us a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, sublicensable, and transferable license to use, distribute, and otherwise exploit your media or information for the purposes of providing the Services, and for the limited purposes specified in our Privacy Policy.
We own all copyrights, trademarks, domains, logos, trade dress, trade secrets, patents, and other intellectual property rights associated with our Services. You may not use our copyrights, trademarks, domains, logos, trade dress, patents, and other intellectual property rights unless you have our written permission. To report copyright, trademark, or other intellectual property infringement, please contact info[at]open-archive.org.
We grant you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, and non-transferable license to use our Services in accordance with these Terms. Note that Save is open‑source and is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 (GPL‑3.0). The code is available on GitHub.
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless OpenArchive and its agents, and the employees, contractors, officers and directors of each, from and against any and all third-party claims, damages, obligations, liabilities, and expenses (including but not limited to attorney's fees) arising from: (i) your use of and access to the Services, including any content therein and any data transmitted or received by you; (ii) your violation of these Terms; (iii) your violation of any third-party right, including without limitation any right of privacy, publicity rights or intellectual property rights; (iv) your violation of any law, rule or regulation of the United States or any other country; or (v) any other party’s access and use of the Services with your unique username, password or other appropriate security code.
You use our Services at your own risk and subject to the following disclaimers. We provide our Services on an “as is” basis without any express or implied warranties, including, but not limited to, warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, non-infringement, and freedom from computer virus or other harmful code. We do not represent or warrant that any information provided by us is accurate, complete, or useful, that our Services will be operational, error-free, secure, or safe, or that our Services will function without disruptions, delays, or imperfections. We make no representations or warranties with respect to any Third-Party Services. We do not control, and are not responsible for, controlling how or when our users use our Services. We are not responsible for the actions or information (including content) of our users or other third parties or Third-Party Services. You release us, affiliates, directors, officers, employees, partners, and agents (together, “OpenArchive Parties”) from any claim, complaint, cause of action, controversy, or dispute and damages, known and unknown, relating to, arising out of, or in any way connected with any such claim you have against any third parties.
THE OPENARCHIVE PARTIES WILL NOT BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY LOST PROFITS OR CONSEQUENTIAL, SPECIAL, PUNITIVE, INDIRECT, OR INCIDENTAL DAMAGES RELATING TO, ARISING OUT OF, OR IN ANY WAY IN CONNECTION WITH OUR TERMS, US, OR OUR SERVICES, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. OUR AGGREGATE LIABILITY RELATING TO, ARISING OUT OF, OR IN ANY WAY IN CONNECTION WITH OUR TERMS, US, OR OUR SERVICES WILL NOT EXCEED THE ACTUAL AMOUNT PAID BY YOU TO OPENARCHIVE UNDER THESE TERMS. THE FOREGOING DISCLAIMER OF CERTAIN DAMAGES AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY WILL APPLY TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW. THE LAWS OF SOME STATES OR JURISDICTIONS MAY NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF CERTAIN DAMAGES, SO SOME OR ALL OF THE EXCLUSIONS AND LIMITATIONS SET FORTH ABOVE MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU. OUR SERVICES OR THIRD-PARTY SERVICES MAY BE INTERRUPTED, INCLUDING FOR MAINTENANCE, UPGRADES, OR NETWORK OR EQUIPMENT FAILURES. WE MAY DISCONTINUE SOME OR ALL OF OUR SERVICES, INCLUDING CERTAIN FEATURES AND THE SUPPORT FOR CERTAIN DEVICES AND PLATFORMS, AT ANY TIME.
These Terms shall remain in full force and effect while you use the Services. OpenArchive may permanently or temporarily terminate, suspend, or otherwise refuse to permit your access to the Services without notice and liability, if, in our sole determination, you violate any terms of these Terms. We may also terminate or suspend your use of the Services at our convenience.
Upon termination of these Terms, all licenses granted by us to use the Services, including, without limitation, Save, will automatically terminate. The following provisions will survive termination of your relationship with us: “Using our Services,” “Indemnification,” “Disclaimers,” “Limitation of Liability,” “Termination,” and “Miscellaneous”.
The following terms apply regarding your use of any iOS-compatible version of Save:
You acknowledge that these Terms are entered into between you and OpenArchive and, that Apple, Inc. (“Apple”) is not a party to these Terms of Use other than as third-party beneficiary as contemplated below.
You are granted a non-transferable license to use Save on an Apple-branded product owned or controlled by you, or as otherwise permitted by the Usage Rules set forth in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions. However, Save may also be accessed and used by other accounts associated with you via Apple’s Family Sharing or volume purchasing programs.
You acknowledge that OpenArchive and not Apple, is responsible for providing the Services.
You acknowledge that Apple has no obligation whatsoever to furnish any maintenance or any support services to you with respect to the Services.
To the maximum extent not prohibited by applicable law, Apple will have no other warranty obligation whatsoever with respect to the Services except, if applicable, to refund the purchase price for Save.
Notwithstanding anything to the contrary herein, and subject to the terms and conditions of the Terms of Use, you acknowledge that, solely as between Apple and OpenArchive, OpenArchive and not Apple is responsible for addressing any claims you may have relating to the Services, or your possession and/or use thereof, including, but not limited, to: (1) product liability claims; (2) any claim that the Services fails to conform to any applicable legal or regulatory requirement; and (3) claims arising under consumer protection or similar legislation.
Further, you agree that if the Services, or your possession and use of the Services, infringes on a third-party’s intellectual property rights, you will not hold Apple responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement and discharge of any such intellectual property infringement claims.
When using the Services, you agree to comply with any and all third-party terms that are applicable to any platform, website, technology or service that interacts with the Services, including the Third-Party Services.
Apple and Apple’s subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and, upon your acceptance of these Terms, will have the right (and will be deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce it against you.
Regardless of the above, OpenArchive’s right to enter, rescind or terminate any variation, waiver or settlement under these Terms is not subject to the consent of any third party.
We may update the Terms from time to time. When we update our Terms, we will update the “Last Modified” date associated with the updated Terms. Your continued use of our Services confirms your acceptance of our updated Terms and supersedes any prior Terms. Our Terms cover the entire agreement between you and us regarding our Services.
If we fail to enforce any of our Terms, that does not mean we waive the right to enforce them. If any provision of the Terms is deemed unlawful, void, or unenforceable, that provision shall be deemed severable from our Terms and shall not affect the enforceability of the remaining provisions. Our Services are not intended for distribution to or use in any country where such distribution or use would violate local law or would subject us to any regulations in another country. We reserve the right to limit our Services in any country.
These Terms are governed by the California law, and any disputes will be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in San Francisco County, California. You agree to submit to the personal jurisdiction of these courts.

This privacy policy (“Policy”) describes how OpenArchive collects, uses, and shares user data, and applies to personal information that is collected through our Services (as defined in the Terms of Service) as well as personal information you provide to us directly. By using the Services, you accept the practices and policies described in this Policy and you consent that we will collect, use, and share your personal information as described below. If you do not agree to this Policy, please do not use the Services.
Save (as defined in the Terms of Service) with privacy by design principles and does not maintain centralized servers that store your media or credentials; we use Orbot and Tor for private and secure data transmission between the application and the destination server. However, we do collect limited information as described below.
If you contact us directly, we collect any information that you choose to provide in your message. For example, when you contact our Save User Support Team, we may receive your name, email address, the contents of a message or attachments that you may send to us, and other information you choose to provide.
The only other information Save collects from users comes from other sources, such Apple and Google app stores, analytics services like Mixpanel, and mobile app development platforms like Firebase. This includes geographical information, information about country, region, city, device model, manufacturer, OS and version, and mobile carrier. These third-party services like Mixpanel, Firebase, Apple App Store, and Google Play Store have their own privacy policies and may transfer data internationally.
When you use our website, we infer your general location information, for example, by using your internet protocol (IP) address, and also use cookies, beacons, invisible tags, unique IDs and similar technologies (collectively “Cookies”) to automatically record certain information from your browser or device. For example, your IP address, network location, web server logs, what browser you are using, device IDs and characteristics, operating system version, browser language settings, referring URLs, and personal information about the usage of the website may be logged.
We do not knowingly collect, use, or disclose personally identifiable information from children under 13. If you believe that we have collected, used, or disclosed personally identifiable information of a child under the age of 13, please contact us so that we can take appropriate action.
We use the collected information to provide Services to you, including to provide you with effective customer service through Save User Support or to send you information about your relationship or transactions with us. We also use this information for research and development purposes, including to analyze and improve the Services. We may use the collected information to enforce of Terms and Policy.
We do not sell, rent or monetize your personal data or content in any way – ever. We may disclose your personal information if we believe in good faith that such disclosure is necessary for any of the following:
You can manage your personal information in Save’s application settings. This information will never be accessible by Save or unauthorized third parties. It is shared with the servers you choose to store media on.
If you choose to use the Internet Archive or other public servers as a destination for your information or media, the information you share with these third parties (including your email address, media, metadata, etc.) will be public. This transfer would be based on your explicit consent.
Please note that the Services are governed by the laws of the United States. If you use our Services, your personal information will be subject to United States law and processed in the United States or in other countries.
The information provided in this “Notice to European Users” section applies only to individuals in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland.
We use your personal information only as permitted by law. Our legal bases for processing the personal information described in this Policy are described below:
We may use your personal information for reasons not described in this Policy where permitted by law and the reason is compatible with the purpose for which we collected it. If we need to use your personal information for an unrelated purpose, we will notify you and explain the applicable legal basis.
If you choose to upload media containing sensitive personal information (e.g., information related to racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religion or other beliefs, health, biometrics or genetic characteristics, criminal background or trade union membership), you do so at your own discretion. Although we cannot access the media due to our privacy-by-design architecture, note that third-party destination servers (like Internet Archive) may be able to view this content. Exercise caution when selecting public destinations for sensitive material.
We retain personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which we collected it, including for the purposes of satisfying any legal, accounting, or reporting requirements, to establish or defend legal claims, or for fraud prevention purposes.
When we no longer require the personal information we have collected about you, we will either delete or anonymize it or, if this is not possible (for example, because your personal information has been stored in backup archives), then we will securely store your personal information and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible. If we anonymize your personal information (so that it can no longer be associated with you), we may use this information indefinitely without further notice to you.
